Why a PhD is worth it? What can I do after?

Doctoral studies offer the opportunity to complete a doctoral degree in theology. This is a full-time study programme which lasts four years (eight semesters). It is divided into two stages: ad licentiam (two years – four semesters) which allows to obtain the degree of licentiate in theology  (licentia in sacra teologia) according to the Apostolic Constitution Sapientia christiana from April 29th, 1979  art. 49 §2. Licentia in sacra teologia is required in order to obtain a doctoral degree in theology.

Doctoral studies in theology offer an in-depth insight into the heritage of religious and cultural aspects of Christianity with a particular emphasis on Catholic theology and doctrinal and social teaching of the Catholic Church. In the course of studies doctoral students concentrate on the Holy Scripture relying on the latest academic research, dogmatic and moral teaching of the Church, the relationship between faith and reason, the links of Catholic faith with social and economic life. There are four research sections offered to doctoral students: Biblical Theology, Systematic Theology, Moral Theology and Practical Theology. A doctoral student is obliged to pursue one area of research.
