Andrzej Grzywacz PhD

Principal investigator

Andrzej is Assistant Professor at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń (curriculum vitae).
Since the beginning of scientific career Andrzej studied the use of carrion breeding flies (Diptera) in forensic entomology. The main topic of his research work now is a comparative study of the morphology of immature stages of Diptera, mainly Muscidae and their relatives. Andrzej studies morphological adaptations of larval stages to their natural habitats. Andrzej is interested in phylogeny, especially of Calyptratae, and the potential use of larval morphology for this purpose.

Kinga Walczak MsC

PhD candidate

Kinga is a PhD student at the Academia Copernicana Interdisciplinary Doctoral School. Since her bachelor studies, she has been conducting research on flies classified within the Muscidae and Fanniidae (Diptera). Her research is focused on morphological adaptations of larval stages to their natural habitats and the reconstruction of phylogenetic relationships based on the morphology of the immature stages. In addition to molecular methods, she also analyses the morphology of muscid larvae using a confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM). Her interests have always been related to forensic biology, especially forensic entomology. Currently she is involved in application of environmental DNA approach in species monitoring.

Agata Jałowiecka

Graduate student

Agata is a graduate student at the Faculty of Biological and Veterinary Sciences, NCU. In her bachelor research project, she has been using methods of molecular taxonomy for delimitation of subspecies of Musca domestica Linnaeus. Currently she is investigating phylogenetic relationships within the family Fanniidae. Agata is also interested in application of environmental DNA approach in species monitoring.

Laura Grzybowska

Graduate student

Laura is a graduate student at the Faculty of Biological and Veterinary Sciences, NCU. In her bachelor’s thesis, she focused on the morphological characteristics of eggs of necrophagous Muscidae species. Currently, she is working on the phylogenetic reconstruction of flies from the genus Musca Linnaeus. Laura is interested in forensic biology, with a particular focus on necrophagous insects and osteology.

Aleksandra Nędza

Graduate student

Aleksandra is a graduate student at the Faculty of Biological and Veterinary Sciences at NCU. Her research interests are broadly related to genetics. In her bachelor's research project, she combined her interest in genetics with forensic entomology, focusing on the characterization of the genomes of necrophagus flies (Diptera) using modern genome sequencing techniques. Her further research will focus on the genomes of species from the Fanniidae family.

Wiktoria Kasprzyk

Undergraduate student

Wiktoria is an undergraduate student in Forensic Biology. Her bachelor research project focuses on delimitation of Musca vetustissima and Musca sorbens (Diptera) utilising molecular identification methods. Her interests include forensic biology, as well as the interconnection with entomology and genetics.

Anastasiia Muzyka

Undergraduate student

Anastasiia is an undergraduate student in Forensic Biology with interests in the ecology and physiology of Diptera, as well as in the factors that determine attractiveness and the colonization of decomposing substrates.

An additional area of interest involves the application of entomological approaches in osteological and forensic-archaeological studies to analyze decomposition processes, reconstruct environmental conditions and assist in the detection of burials.

Wiktoria Pacek

Undergraduate student

Wiktoria is an undergraduate student in Forensic Biology, interested in application of molecular methods in insect systematics and phylogenetics, with particular emphasis on house flies (Muscidae). She is interested in DNA barcoding of forensically relevant species, particularly Australian Fanniidae (Diptera).
