Macroecology tries to understand occurrences and numbers of living organisms from a broad temporal and geographical perspective. Such a perspective enables us to include the factor scale into our theories and models. Indeed, scale seems to be a key factor in modern ecology. The notion that ecological patterns and processes vary with temporal and spatial scale sharpened our view about the basic principles that govern ecological processes and tightened the links between ecology and phylogenetic history.

The interest in ecological patterns at different scales is therefore the starting point of our research interests and directs our teaching activities.
