THE ESSENCE OF THINGS (EXCERPTS)
STANISŁAW BIAŁOGŁOWICZ

Almost every artist has an implicit need to create a work that has not been created or seen so far [...]. We can thus say that it appears somehow ex nihilo, as there was nothing similar before its arrival. We can also state that each creation by a human being contains a moment of novelty, because despite the fact that... (more...)

STILL LIFE (EXCERPTS)
ŁUKASZ HUCULAK

Stopping or "putting time to death" is expressed by the same phrase -still life, stilleben. Life immobilised, life going on. The expression "still life" puts emphasis on a lasting, negating activity and in the Romanesque "nature morte" we feel the Baroque fear of nothingness. The vanitative message is hidden in every, even the smallest, element of the matter. This is... (more...)

I WANTED THINGS TO SPEAK INSTEAD OF ME (EXCERPTS)
JANUSZ KACZMARSKI

[...] I have been driven to this way of art by my admiration for the possibilities existing in painting: enhancing the intensity of existence of what has been presented on the surface of paintings, and creating the suggestion of a new, "parallel" to the nature of life. This - as well as my contrariness gave rise to my choice of... (more...)

OBJECTS IN THE SPACE OF A PAINTING (EXCERPTS)
PIOTR KLUGOWSKI

[...] We often talk about the duality of the nature of things. While presenting objects in my compositions, I tried to ask myself the question of whether knowledge of the nature of objects deeper than that visually and semantically attributed to them, is possible? Is there some other deeper dimension? The painting reality I shape in my compositions is saturated... (more...)

ON THE NATURE OF THINGS AND REALITY CREATED IN PAINTING (OWN PAINTING) (EXCERPTS)
PAWEŁ LEWANDOWSKI-PALLE

[...] I am absolutely in favour of creation. Reminding oneself that art is an intellectual discipline does not seem right here. The nature of things and reality created by a painter is his/her painting, or to use a safer term, paintings. [...]
A painting should keep some mystery, because a painting is itself a mystery. Painting is participation in the... (more...)

TO ACHIEVE THE RIGHT IMAGE OF THINGS...
MAGDALENA RABIZO-BIREK

The 5th Polish Painting Forum, called The Nature Of Things, was organised in a different way than previously and was held in a new venue: the villa "Magija" owned by Magda and Janusz Demkowicz in Orelec, located in a picturesque area at the foot of Żukowa mountain range. The new place provided the participants of the Forum who live... (more...)

NATURE OF THE IMAGE OF THINGS (EXCERPTS)
MIROSŁAWA ROCHECKA

The nature of a painting and the nature of nature are similar. They belong to the profane sphere, to the sphere of matter - not spirit. They are "not-sacred". Their main characteristic, the essence of their existence is the existence - being itself, alive or lifeless, really present in time and space, of a particular shape, nature, function, undergoing changes... (more...)

OMNIS MUNDI CREATURA (EXCERPTS)
KAZIMIERZ ROCHECKI

[...] For ages, creators asked themselves questions concerning nature, or the essence of things. They search for senses of its existence, meanings, depth, ideas, and maybe soul... Even the search itself may become an important part of the creative process. Frequently, it is even the main driving force inspiring artistic activities; however, only finding this personal learning key for understanding... (more...)

ON OBJECTS IN THE PAINTING OF ALEKSANDRA SIMIŃSKA (EXCERPTS)
EWA URBAŃSKA

[...] While analysing the painting of Aleksandra Simińska (and talking to her), I ask myself the question of whether the essence of painting may be described at the same time as the idea and something concrete, with a painting "sign" and symbolic meaning? Maybe this is a superficial contradiction because when we talk -Simińska about something concrete, simplification of an... (more...)

WATER - THE NATURE OF THINGS (EXCERPTS)
JOANNA STASIAK

[...] In September 2006, I stood on a concrete dam in Solina, separating the wide river lagoon from the cliff with falling water. Solina is a water body dug in the mountains, clasped by buckles of concrete slabs. The gathered mass of calm water presses against the dam. Large carp stopped by the barrier teem, tempted with bread. On the... (more...)

THESE ARE THE FACTS (EXCERPTS)
WIESŁAW SZAMBORSKI

These are the facts in which the essence (nature) of things exists. Obviously in a very narrow, my own scope. [...]
In 1960, I joined the Faculty of Painting and Graphic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. I studied painting in the studio of professor A. Łyżwański, and later -Professor M. Bylina. About the half way through... (more...)

THE PHENOMENON OF A PAINTING (EXCERPTS)
KRZYSZTOF WACHOWIAK

[...] Painting as an expression of painting art is a thing, has a matter and form. The matter of a painting is its material: pigment, binder, surface. A painting may exist on a wall, canvas, wooden board, paper, and other surfaces which allow it to last. [...]
Many people believe that everything in nature happens according to some rules; anyway,... (more...)

THE NATURE OF THINGS
MIROSŁAWA ROCHECKA

When put together things constitute the reality wherein we live giving it a realistic form. They have been brought to life by man, shaped by his hands and mind for a specific reason. The object of things is to satisfy a multitude of human needs. This chief object that underlies their coming into existence equips things with utility, aesthetic, technical,... (more...)

PHILOSOPHICAL ASPECTS OF DISCOVERING THE NATURE OF THINGS (EXCERPTS)
KS. KRZYSZTOF BOCHENEK

In our everyday life the issue of separating the real from the unreal does not often seem to be a problem. We are convinced that we have insight into reality and that we know how to get to its crux. We tend to think that the world is exactly as we see it, and when things only appear to be... (more...)

A HUMAN BEING VERSUS THE NATURE OF THINGS (EXCERPTS)
KAZIMIERZ GELLETA

[...] The concept of the nature of things evolves and is constantly modified alongside the changes that a human being experiences himself. Within the relationship a human being, a thing, a modified change of the nature of thing occurs, but things also change the human being himself. Some can make him active and creative, while others passive and destructive. [...]... (more...)

SOME COMMENTS ON OBJECTS AND PAINTING (EXCERPTS)
JACEK KAWAŁEK

[...] In the world of painting an object stops being an object. Even by definition. In painting a still life, a painter paints a picture. He does not observe things as they are. He observes and strives to see what is most important from his point of view. Pure painting, "captured" in things and objects. He performs a peculiarly creative... (more...)

SIGNS AND SYMBOLS -THINGS AND NATURE IN MODERN ART
MAGDALENA RABIZO-BIREK

What things inspire modern artists? This is one of many issues Mirosława and Kazimierz Rochecki - the people behind the Polish Painting Forum - put up for contemplation by participants in the Forum. I will try to answer the question but only within the limits of work by artists participating in the Forum. Inviting them was not a matter of... (more...)
