THE ESSENCE OF THINGS (EXCERPTS)
STANISŁAW BIAŁOGŁOWICZ

Almost every artist has an implicit need to create a work that has not been created or seen so far [...]. We can thus say that it appears somehow ex nihilo, as there was nothing similar before its arrival. We can also state that each creation by a human being contains a moment of novelty, because despite the fact that each human being is similar to another one [...], each element of an individual is different and unique. Therefore, we can talk about a unique character of a separate individual, because EACH of us despite being DIFFERENT, with his or her limbs is at the same time similar to oneself. [...] An artist uses nature, namely external or internal reference, which initiates the ideas of a painting and things themselves such as: canvas, its size, paint in a painting or wood or stone in a sculpture. Only using these materials, the ARTIST can create an unusual thing that I could call the nature of things. The first sign of reaching it is perception, visual impressions or their simplified schemes expressing delight or disappointment with the Nature or the Thing. Then I confirmed myself in the conviction that I am more of a painter than a philosopher, although my subsequent thoughts move beyond the areas of these concepts far from painting. [...] There is always the first impression which leads to a moment of reflection directed at getting to know the essence of the painted being watched or created as the structure of things. [...]
