THE PHENOMENON OF A PAINTING (EXCERPTS)
KRZYSZTOF WACHOWIAK

[...] Painting as an expression of painting art is a thing, has a matter and form. The matter of a painting is its material: pigment, binder, surface. A painting may exist on a wall, canvas, wooden board, paper, and other surfaces which allow it to last. [...]
Many people believe that everything in nature happens according to some rules; anyway, it is enough to take a look around: after the spring comes the summer, rivers flow to the sea, hurricanes do not last forever. One of these rules is a tendency pushing each thing to its natural development whose aim is attaining a mature form.
Man and his activity are not an exception. In order to attain this form, for example in painting, you also need to use some rules. [...] A painting, in order to attain its perfect, pure form, should finally solve the problem of usefulness and incontrovertibility of relations between all forms and co-creating means, such as: composition, drawing, colour, light, matter etc. [...] A painting exists thanks in both form and content, and it cannot be concealed that formal means, although determining the quality of a painting, have been applied in order to express something by their use.
