The UV upturn phenomenon is characterised by an unexpected UV emission in early-type galaxies (ETGs) between 1200 angstroms and the Lyman limit. In this project we will explore a potential connection between emission-line strength of [OIII], [NII], H_alpha and H_beta (and potentially other emission-lines) and the strength of the UV emission in ETGs presenting both UV weak and UV upturn, with the goal of characterising the link between this phenomenon and galaxies classified as LINERs. We will use data from the GAMA survey crossmatched with SDSS and GALEX (which has already been selected) and develop a jupyter notebook with the analysis. Some python knowledge is welcome, but this is not obligatory; the student will be able to develop his/hers python skills during the internship. At the end of the internship the student will acquire python programming skills as well as knowledge of what the UV upturn is (and associated phenomena). In an optimal scenario (depending on the results) this could turn out to be a peer-reviewed publication.
